We have this bib from my mother's father's side of the family. His mother, Lil's great great grandmother Alice Irene was born in Bulgaria, which was part of the Ottoman Empire then, in 1888. We think the bib must have been hers or perhaps even belonged to an aunt or uncle of hers, who were born in Turkey (though her mother was born in the U.S.). The family were Christian missionaries. The inscription on the bib is in Arabic script, and we have a friend who reads Ottoman Turkish. He told us that it says "Don't be naughty, Mama and Baba love you." Pedagogical fashions come and go, but some things don't change.
